School and Library Visits

As a former teacher and someone who still works closely with young people, I am passionate about inspiring every child to see themselves as a reader and a writer. I’m happy to tailor the length and content of my talk or workshop to suit the curriculum or the community.

Author visit

I’ll discuss my mixed heritage background (which served as inspiration for my writing) my roundabout journey to becoming an author, and how I come up with ideas. Plus, lots of time for the best part: questions from the audience! Duration: 40 minutes.

Writing workshop

I’m a former secondary English teacher, and working with young people on their writing is something I love — and miss about teaching. I’ll work with your school to define the learning outcomes and length of the session so they work for your pupils and curriculum. Some relevant curriculum links include:

  • History and Geography: Colonialism and Partition

  • PSHE: Bullying and friendship

  • Literacy: particularly scene-setting and character development

Having Janeen visit was a pleasure - the subject matter of her book really resonated with our Year 5 and 6 students. We spend a lot of time as a Year Group learning about World War 2 where we touch on former British colonies, but learning specifically about the partition of India and formation of Pakistan was both engaging and relevant to our students. What’s more, the way Janeen spoke about her writing process was really inspirational, as a lot of our students enjoy creative writing and aspire to be writers and illustrators themselves. Hearing that Janeen won a writing competition, and did so after enjoying other careers, was particularly motivational to them.
